Siloxanes
Siloxanes are commercially produced compounds used in adhesives and sealants as well as a large variety of consumer goods including personal care products. However, when combusted, siloxanes are oxidized into silicon dioxide which form a hard sand like deposit. Landfill gas contains siloxanes as a trace element and when combusted, they accumulate throughout the combustion chamber, on the head, piston, valves and spark plugs. Turbine engines and turbochargers are not immune to this problem and will accumulate deposits on rotor blades, etc. LFG unfiltered for siloxanes, or unmonitored deposits not only affect spark plug performance, but greatly reduces engine efficiency and require increased overhaul schedules. |
