Shadowing
Just as putting a board in front of a flashlight will block the light from everything behind that board, so the ground electrode can shadow a portion of the air fuel mixture from exposure to the spark. Bosch +2,+4 and Platinum Ir Fusion plugs are specifically designed to reduce shadowing by using their surface air gap technology to fully exposing the flame kernel, thus virtually eliminating shadowing. Where this air gap technology is inappropriate, (such as for some racing applications) Bosch use a variety of other ground electrode designs such as a fine wire ground, cut back ground, or angled ground electrode which also reduce shadowing. |
